AI Questions to Ask Your MBA Program

AI in MBA programs. AI is rapidly reshaping how business schools design curriculum. New courses, concentrations, and learning experiences are being introduced, often within existing degree structures. That is expected.

What matters more is how *you*, as a working professional considering a part-time, weekend, or executive MBA, evaluate whether a program is truly preparing you for an AI-enabled workplace.

Here are three questions to get you started.

1. What is this MBA program actually doing about AI?

Look for specificity. Program leaders should be able to point to exact courses, class sessions, and learning outcomes—not general statements about “integrating AI.”

Strong programs will offer:

  • Dedicated AI sessions embedded across the curriculum
  • A clear progression from fundamentals to application
  • Exposure to both faculty expertise and practitioner perspectives

At Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), for example, the Executive MBA Class of 2028 includes two AI-focused sessions per semester in addition to core Information Systems coursework. Over two years, students engage in eight structured sessions centered on “leading people and AI in an organization.”

Topics include AI foundations, prompt engineering, ethics and governance, analytics, functional fluency, no-code tools, and product strategy.

2. I’m new to AI. Will this program meet me where I am?

Most experienced professionals are still early in their AI journey. A strong MBA program should assume no prior expertise and provide a clear path to fluency.

Look for:

  • Structured onboarding into AI concepts
  • Practical, hands-on learning (not just theory)
  • Flexible, self-paced resources to build confidence

Many universities now provide access to curated learning platforms such as LinkedIn Learning through their libraries. These resources allow you to build foundational knowledge on your own schedule.

At VCU, Executive MBA students begin with AI fundamentals, prompt engineering, and hands-on work with no-code tools. The goal is simple: give every student, regardless of background, a usable level of AI fluency early in the program.

3. What is the broader university doing around AI?

An MBA program does not operate in isolation. The strength of your experience depends on how deeply AI is embedded across the institution.

Ask about:

  • University-wide AI strategy and leadership (e.g., Provost-level initiatives)
  • Availability of tools such as ChatGPT or Microsoft Copilot
  • Cross-disciplinary learning opportunities
  • AI integration in undergraduate and graduate programs

At VCU, AI efforts extend beyond the MBA. The university provides Copilot access to all students, supports community-facing AI initiatives, and is working to incorporate AI across the curriculum. Some graduate programs, such as the MDA Weekend program, have been significantly redesigned with AI integration beginning in Fall 2026.

AI in MBA programs

AI in MBA programs is no longer a “nice-to-have”. The real question is not whether a program mentions AI, but how intentionally and practically it prepares you to lead in an AI-driven environment.
