FAQ for part-time and weekend MBA programs
- What does tuition include? Beyond the core instructional content there are other factors to consider. For weekend programs, ask about parking, meals during class weekends, text books, software, and specifics on what is NOT covered during the international immersion. For part-time programs, ask about parking costs, books and materials, and Department fees (e.g., some departments like Information Systems may have additional fees to cover software costs).

- How long does the MBA program take? Weekend programs are generally cohort-based with a defined start and a known graduation date. The program calendar should show that. Part-time programs should be able to tell you the average time to complete the degree, usually around three years.
- Are scholarships available? Generally speaking, there are limited scholarships for weekend or part-time MBA programs, because almost all students are working adults. There might be some available after one year of studies, but they will be competitive and not a large dollar amount.
- How do I pay for the MBA degree? Most students will consider self pay, loans and employer support options to pay tuition. For US citizens, there are federal loans available. Also, your employer may have fixed tuition benefit amounts or will pay a percentage of the tuition. Some employers will do 100% tuition. Most employers will have a “claw-back” provision if you quit before a pre-agreed-upon time.
- Are there opportunities to network with other students, alumni, and faculty? In weekend MBA programs, there is likely to be a networking social every month, plus a major event in the fall and spring semesters. Sometimes, there are summer family-centric events. In part-time MBA programs, there are orientation events in the Fall and Spring. Also, the Dean’s office may host events for all graduate students (MBA, specialty masters, and PhDs).
- What career help is available to students and alumni? Most Business Schools will have dedicated career professionals to help students. Often, they also help alumni. They offer LinkedIn profile workshops, 1:1 sessions, mock interviews, and resume reviews.
- Can I pause the MBA program if I have an emergency, job change, or other life event? Yes, life happens. Most schools will have a maximum time limit to complete a degree, usually five years. If it is more than that, you will likely have to repeat some courses. In cohort programs you can rejoin the program but will have to acclimate to a new class cohort and teams.
- Are tutors available for quantitative subjects? It depends on the University. Sometimes, PhD or year two graduate students from the Finance, Economics, or Accounting departments may run workshops. Otherwise, there are numerous private tutors available both in-person and online off-campus.
- I am a “seasoned” adult, will I be too old to get an MBA degree? No, many seasoned students are preparing for their second act after a long corporate or military career. They may want to focus on their side hustles, pivot to a new industry, or help a nonprofit. I have had students in their 50s and 60s successfully complete their MBA degrees.
- Can I bring my spouse or +1 on the international trip? It depends on the University’s policy. About 50% of MBA programs will allow guests on international trips. Some may restrict business meetings to students only due to capacity challenges at business sites. You should ask for specifics about passports, visas, hotel rooms, and group meals.
